Although she liked to draw and her father was an award winning artist/illustrator, Susan Terpning chose Anthropology rather than Art as her major filed of study. Her entire she had shared her father’s interest in natural history and native cultures and was especially drawn to the culture of the Native American. As a child she made war bonnets and did beadwork and always played the part of the Indian in games with her brother.
Her early sketches were of Indians and horses. Whe Susan graduated from college with an Anthropology degree but couldn’t find a job close to her home her father encouraged her to try painting professionally. That was 20 years ago. Her natural artistic talent combined with her passion for native culture quickly earned her a reputation as an exceptional artist American West.
